A great walk through spectacular Peak District countryside with some wonderful views.
Starting from Hurdlow Station Car Park on the High Peak Trail we walk north west on the Trail for a short distance before turning off and proceeding through the hamlet of Hurdlow to the foot of High Wheeldon, a 422-meter (1,387 ft) limestone hill. We climb steeply up the hill to reach the trig point at the top where we enjoy panoramic views of Chrome Hill, Parkhouse Hill and the Upper Dove Valley. High Wheeldon has been in the care of the National Trust since 1946 when it was donated by the owner to the Trust as a war memorial. A plaque at the summit says that the hill was presented 'in honoured memory of the men of Derbyshire and Staffordshire who fell in the Second World War'.
We descend from the summit gently in a south easterly direction, eventually emerging onto a road which we follow downhill to the hamlet of Crowdecote, located on the River Dove. We follow the river, first along a track and then across fields to Pilsbury Castle Hills, the site of a castle constructed in the late 11th century by the invading Normans to secure the surrounding area. After reading the information board at the site we climb away from the Dove valley, walking through more picturesque Peak District countryside, eventually rejoining the High Peak Trail near Parsley Hay from where we follow the Trail back to our starting point.
