Overview

Leaving Clifton we walk up and over towards Snelston park . Diving down into a field via the Poacher's stile we admire the huge old Monkey Puzzle trees and the hall behind. Approaching  Brook Farm we then negotiate Virgins'Alley and Cinderhill's Wood. Doubling back we now enjoy Brook Farm's picturesque garden before reaching Sheldon church for a well earned lunch. After lunch we find a rather nice path along a stream backed onto by local cottages and descend to the River Dove and Toadhole Footbridge. We then follow easy paths along the Dove into Church Mayfield past their lovely church and past  back to back homes in a throwback to the Industrial Revolution. Recrossing the Dove we return to Clifton via one of the 'goals' in Ashbourne's notorious annual Royal Shrovetide Football game.
