This walk makes an unusual ascent of Y Ro Wen from the village of Cwm Penmachno. We set out on paths through fields and partially felled forest before breaking out onto open moorland. After looking down a narrow gorge towards the village, now far below us, we turn and continue climbing gently on rough ground past the tiny lake of Llyn y Tomla. The climb steepens a little as we approach the broad ridge of Y Ro Wen and join a path to the 594 metre summit where, conditions allowing, we can enjoy 360° mountain views. The descent brings us across open ground to the remains of the old Cwt-y-Bugail quarry. Here we join a quarry track heading round above the disused Blaen-y-Cwm quarry, soon descending through the atmospheric ruins of the Rhiw-bach quarry. A pleasant, level path continues through a short stretch of forest before a final steep descent through the Rhiw-fachno quarry brings us back to the start.
