West Mendip Walkers moderate 9.5 mile circular walk from Pensford Village Hall (BS39 4HW). The walk heads north west from Pensford across fields passing Norton Malreward on well defined paths rising steeply to Maes Knoll Hill Fort. The route continues north to pick up a quiet country lane heading west and after a short distance walkers will pick up a path to descend to North Wick and on to Chew Magna. From Chew Magna the route follows the Two Rivers Way to Stanton Drew passing the stone circles and back to Pensford along the River Chew.
The Maes Knoll hill fort is approximately 390 by 84 feet (119 m × 26 m), and 45 feet (14 m) in height, covering 20 acres (8.1 ha), and consists of a fairly large flat open area, roughly triangular in shape, that was fortified by ramparts and shaping of the steep-sided hilltop around the northern, eastern and southwestern sides of the hill. It rises to an altitude of 197 metres (646 ft) above sea level,[5] and provides views over the lands it would have once commanded. From here, there are clear views north to Bristol, east to Bath and the Cotswold Hills, and south over Stanton Drew stone circles to Chew Valley Lake and the Mendip Hills.
