Meet at Hydon’s Ball NT car park, Salt Lane, Godalming GU8 4BB – (free at the time of publication) for a hilly walk, firstly via a wooded valley on public footpaths up to the National Trust’s Winkworth Arboretum and a morning coffee stop at the Winkworth tea room. (If you are a NT member, please bring your membership card and scan it at the kiosk.) Then descending through the Arboretum’s grounds to their lakeside and valley floor before ascending through hilly farmland and traversing southwards along the Greensand Way to the White Horse pub at Hascombe for lunch, or a picnic spot near the village pond and St Peter’s church with its beautifully decorated interior. After lunch continuing along the Greensand Way for a while before ascending Hydon’s Ball where there is a wonderful viewpoint and the memorial to Octavia Hill. Finally a gentle short descent to the cars.
