March 8 is International Women's Day. To mark the day, this leisurely urban walk will take us round the four statues of women in the city of Glasgow. Yes that's right. Despite an abundance of statues across the city only four are of women.
Our walk will start in George Square at the statue of Queen Victoria and take us along the river past Dolores Ibarrubi and on to Govan to Isabella Elder in Elder Park and Mary Barbour at the Govan Subway station where the walk will end. The route will showcase many other sights along the way including the nappy pin sculputure at Rottenrow Gardens, the new Govan to Partick bridge, which is currently being built, and Govan Old Church. We'll also stop for a coffee/tea break at the newly-redeveloped area around Barclays Bank on the south side of the river. There is some good outdoor seating in the landscaped grounds so please bring your own drink/snack. There is also a cafe if you prefer to buy something.
This is an urban walk of around six miles, almost exclusively on riverside tarmac paths and pavements.
You don't need to identify as a woman to join us on this walk to celebrate International Women's Day. Everyone is welcome.
We'll start from Queen Street station, just outside the ticket office, at 9.30am, from where we'll make our way together to George Square.
The walk will finish at Govan Subway station where you can catch the subway or a bus back to town or onwards to your destination.
To book a place on the walk, contact Yvonne no earlier than two weeks before.
