From Jedburgh Abbey we head north along the Jedwater path, passing under the 16th century Cannongate Bridge. The river cuts through steep banks as it winds out of the town.
Care to be taken as we cross the busy A68 road at two different points.
We then turn onto farm tracks before heading along a quiet road leading into Lanton Woods. Following narrow twisting woodland paths we arrive at a gateway giving open views to the north and looking down on the ruins of Timpendean Tower (a fifteenth century tower house).
To get to the Tower there is a high ladder style to climb (unfortunately the gate is padlocked). Some walkers may find this difficult, the options are to climb the gate or wait at this point as the group will return via the style to continue the walk.
We cross a field of long grass to reach Timpendean Tower. At the time of reccing the cattle were out of sight in the lower part of the field.
The walk continues on woodland tracks and narrow paths taking us out onto a quiet road with open views south to Jedburgh. Through a narrow gap there is another field track again the grass was high and at the time of reccing there were no cattle in the field. Our return to the town is by Jedburgh Castle Jail, downhill to the Square.
Lots of historic places of interest and coffee shops in Jedburgh.
Walking boots and poles are advised depending on the weather.
