This is a walk of 7.5 miles over 2 hills west of Peebles, both offering spectacular views all day and in every direction.
We cross first into Hay Lodge Park before crossing the A72, and taking a farm track up through Peebles golf course and Jedderfield Farm, to reach Hamilton Hill, which offers commanding views over Peebles itself as well as the surrounding hills in all directions.
From the summit, we descend easily to and along the Cross Borders Drove Road for about 2 miles before climbing steadily to the hillfort on White Meldon, for more long views across the Peeblesshire and Pentland Hills. We turn south and skirt round South Hill Head, enjoying distant views all the way, to descend to the Roman Road which takes us back to Jedderfield.
The walk is over farm tracks, grassy paths, with some pathless heathery stretches, and there is no road walking. There are 2 gates and a style which must be climbed, and two fences which have to be straddled.
There will be a lunch stop and drink stops as required. Full hill-walking gear will be required, as we will be on elevated ground with little shelter. If the grass is wet, gaiters will be very useful.
Peebles has a good range of post-walk refreshment options.
Circular walk, grade B, moderate. Hiking boots and poles are recommended.
