The John Buchan Way was opened in 2003. It is named after the writer and diplomat John Buchan (1875-1940) who has many associations with the area.
The long-distance footpath between Broughton and Peebles is approximately 13 miles in length and travels through some of the Scottish Borders' remoter glens as well as higher ground with exceptional views. Although there are some fairly steep ascents the walking is generally easy going over a mixture of hill paths and tracks, in open moorland, woods and farmland.
The route has been split into two stages.
The first stage has total ascent of 927 feet with two ascents. The first is a steady climb to the lower slopes of Clover Law and Broomy Side. The second climb up the lower slopes of Penvalla is steeper but shorter. There are 5 stiles.
We will stop for an open-air coffee and an alfresco lunch.
Toilets and refreshments are available from Laurel Bank Tea Room but this is only open from 10am to 4pm on Saturday. We plan to leave before it opens but it will be open on our return.
If you are planning to come please advise leader by phone, email or text. Please advise whether you will meet up with the group at Biggar Corn Exchange or drive to Stobo on Saturday.
