West Mendip Walkers 8.8 mile easy/moderate walk taking in Leigh Woods, the Avon Gorge and Ashton Court. From the car park we head towards Velvet Bottom and then follow the wide tow path along the River Avon/Avon Gorge. We pass the observatory high up on the Downs under the Clifton suspension bridge - Brunel won the competition to build in it in 1831 and it was completed in 1864. We pass under the Plimsole swing bridge, Bedminster cricket ground and then head up into Ashton Court through the deer park and to Justins Meadow. We head back into Leigh woods, walk through Stokeleigh camp (hill fort) with excellent views of the gorge and suspension bridge.
There is a cafe in Ashton Court should anyone wish to have a drink/ice cream before heading back via Leigh Woods. We walk back to the car park along forest tracks. Please note this walk takes in some urban areas to get from the Gorge to Ashton Court but only for a short time.
This walk has a few gentle climbs.
