West Mendip Walkers moderate 9.5 mile walk from Croscombe. Leaving the Fayreway in Croscombe we walk east through the edge of the village and into Ham Woods. We follow the old quarry track through the length of Ham Woods and then climb up a steep set of steps and onto the East Mendip Way. We pass through the Windsor Hill Tunnel and then over the Windsor Hill Viaduct with dramatic views down into the gorge that we have emerged from. We then strike off across the fields towards Windsor Hill Farm and visit the Woven Cafe, part of the Rock Farm Collective, for coffee and cake. We then loop round past Burnthouse Farm to the Viaduct and pick up the East Mendip Way heading west. We drop down on Sharcombe Lane into Dinder and then walk back across the fields to Croscombe. Post walk refreshments at The George Inn, which is a short way from our cars. Dog friendly, but with some stiles, including Mendip stone stiles and several short lane stretches. This walk has a few gentle climbs.
The Windsor Hill tunnels were first constructed in the early 1870s as part of an extension to the S&D line, linking Evercreech Junction to Bath. The line cost £400,000 to build and opened in July 1874. It quickly became a key route, connecting the Midlands to the south coast.
Please register with me so I can give the Woven Cafe an idea of our numbers.
Quarrying in the Ham Woods Quarry was started in the 1890's by John Wainwright & Co.
