Overview

Welcome to the second leg of the Minster Way!

The route starts hugging the western bank of the River Derwent. With the river as our companion, we will head North from Kexby towards Stamford Bridge. The path here, though flat, could be muddy as we walk along the river bank. Passing through fields grazed by livestock, we might even have opportunity to spot one of the hardy herons who make this stretch of the river their home.

As the river bears Eastward we will arrive in the small town of Stamford Bridge passing under the majestic Victorian railway viaduct. Crossing the eponymous bridge, will walk through the centre of the village to view the former Mill and also the monument of the Battle of Stamford Bridge...the other 'great' battle of 1066!

Now in the East Riding of Yorkshire, the route skirts the most likely site of that famous battle and follows roads for the next couple of miles passing the site of a former brickworks to Full Sutton. This stretch of the walk is dominated with views of the newly expanded Full Sutton prison...though not the most picturesque of sites, you will have  the chance to see what one of the newly expanded 'super-prisons' looks like up-close!

After another break on Full Sutton's Village Green, we will leave the road and make our way across arable land towards the beautifully sited village of Bishop Wilton. Throughout this final part of the walk, the striking escarpment of the Yorkshire Wolds becomes ever more present...although the incline is only very gentle for this leg of the walk.

We will finish the leg on the centre of Bishop Wilton on the bridge over its beck. There, we'll be able to warm up a coffee and cake in the Village Shop or something stronger in the Fleece Inn and you'll also have the opportunity to have a look inside the village Church, whose stunning roof and floor (which is the same as in the Vatican) make it one of the most beautiful ecclesiastical buildings in the East Riding!
