It is important to minimise the number of cars parking at the start of this walk, so please follow advice given on meeting and starting places.
We start the walk at the gates of Ladyland House on Dipple Road above Kilbirnie. The walk is on rough paths that are liable to be wet and we will cross shallow fords on stepping stones a several points. The walk is linear and involves climbing just one fence. It feels pretty flat but is actually a very gradual ascent, making for a pleasant, not very strenuous reach to the area's highest point at 2125ft.
From Ladyland House we make our way through a small estate, past the stables and abandoned Cockston Farm. We will stop for a tea break after the waterfalls at the high ridge over Maich Water where legend tells of a ghostly suicide. We continue to follow Maich Water, skirt Hannah Law and make the final short ascent of Misty Law in just over 100 meters. We will have lunch at the bottom of the hill then make our way back by the same route, pausing for another wee tea break if the group wants one.
There is a path for most of the way but it is obscured by vegetation and resembles more of a shallow stream at times. We therefore have to skip backwards and forwards over it, finding the best ways on either side. Gaiters and strongly recommended.
Parking is very limited at the gates of Ladyland House and for this reason, we ask walkers to share cars by meeting at Morrison's or adding passengers to cars at Garnock Street carpark next to Tesco's in the middle of Kilbirnie KA25 7DJ. If going directly from Morrisons with a full car, then use KA25 7JR. Approx. 25 minutes from Morrisons.
