Overview

This is a complimentary walk to the walk of the 6 January 2026, starting again from the free car park at Monckton Manor. Walk is mainly on good paths though we do have the odd arable field to cross. Leaving the car park we follow the Chevet Branch Line and the abandoned Barnsley Canal to the south side of Royston then follow footpaths to Notton Wood Nature Reserve. Passing Notton we then pick up the Chevet Branch Line again which we follow into the Newmiller Dam Country Park and hopefully a pub stop at Newmiller Dam.  After the pub stop it's just over 2 miles back to our start point through the Country Park and once again the Chevet Branch Line. Total length of walk is 11 miles hence the moderate grading, most of the walk is on the flat with only 525 foot of climbing and only one stile to negotiate.

The car park at the start is free but is difficult to spot from the road. If travelling north on the B6132 near Notton you pass the barns of Notton Grange on your right and 300m later you will see bridge parapets. Just before the parapets you will see a sign for Smawell Lane, this is where you turn left and enter the car park immediately. If you go pass Monckton Manor on your right you have gone too far.
