A WALK - Leader: Kate Donaldson - 8.5 miles, 236m (775’) ascent
The walk begins with a gentle climb as we leave Monyash before descending into Deep Dale Nature Reserve. The nature reserve is famous for its wildflowers. It’s too early this time of year to experience the flowers; it'll be well worth revisiting in a couple of months’ time when they’ll be in bloom. The dale itself is a beautiful, steep sided limestone gorge, typical of the area. Along the route through the dale there are several dew ponds, common man made features in limestone areas of the Peak District, designed to collect surface water for livestock to drink from. About ¾ of the way along the dale you may notice a linear hummock running up the slope on the right. This is toxic soil resulting from the spoil of past lead mining in the area and blossoms from May to September with plants that thrive in such conditions.
At the end of Deep Dale, on flat, scrubby ground beside the path are the remains of earth and stone walls of the Romano-British settlement of Horsborough.
On leaving Deep Dale there’s a climb towards Taddington, where we’ll stop for lunch. This marks 5 miles. After lunch there’s a short climb out of Taddington before the long descent to Flagg where we’ll join the Limestone Way and return back down to Monyash.
