West Mendip Walkers easy/moderate 9 mile Linear walk from Moretonhampstead to the village of Chagford, Dartmoor National Park. Leaving the village of Moreton we climb gently up to Butterdon Down which offers fine views of Haytor and Dartmoor. We remain at this level for a mile or so continuing along the Dartmoor Way before descending steeply on a stony path to Fingle Bridge. We will stop for coffee/ice cream here. We leave the river Teign behind and climb steadily to reach Hunters path with stunning valley views and sightings of Castle Drogo, the last English Castle to be built around 1911-1930 and home to the Drewe family before being acquired by the NT. We rejoin the River Teign and follow it for a couple of miles into Chagford.
After refreshments in the square we will catch Stagecoach Bus 173 back to Moretonhampstead(£2 or bus pass). Total ascent 375M/1220ft. A couple of stiles and the walk is dog friendly. Refreshments after the Walk at The Old Forge tea shop, Chagford Square. Will need to pre order cream teas/cakes.
