Overview

The final outing for this year's Mountain Fitness series - this almost-circular walk takes us from the outskirts of Eastbourne, up onto the downs with several undulations before passing the Long Man of Wilmington and an early lunch in the pretty village of Alfriston. From there it's back up through Friston forest. You may catch a view of a horse, but today we'll be turning left to find our finale on the Seven Sisters.

A long walk taken at a fast pace, with a total ascent of at least 1000m.

This year the walk falls before the clocks go forward, but sunset 6:25/dusk 6:51 should give plenty of daylight, especially as the last mile-and-a-bit is within Eastbourne town limits.

Bring a packed lunch and plenty of water and snacks. Deli/shop available at Alfriston (about a third of the way in), Kiosk/tap/toilets available at Exceat (two-thirds). Pub at the end.

Terrain: South Downs, lots of hills

Travel: Take 9:24 from London Victoria (9:31 Clapham Junction, 9:40 East Croydon), arr. Hampden Park 10:47. Buy return to Eastbourne.
