Come and join me on a varied walk through the town of Musselburgh and its immediate environs. The name Musselburgh derives from the extensive mussel beds that lie along the shore in the Firth of Forth. The towns coat of arms is made of three mussels and three anchors reflecting the fishing tradition of the community.
Our route today begins at the picturesque Fisherrow Harbour before heading into town via North High Street, the River Esk and a beautiful old stone bridge. Keep your eyes peeled for the Musselburgh Archer and the statue of David Macbeth Moir, a local doctor before entering the main High Street. Here we may pause for an early coffee (and toilets) at Cafe Cammafi and maybe an ice cream at the famous S. Luca's an ice cream parlour dating back to 1908. We then head towards Musselburgh Racecourse which contains the nine hole Old Links golf course, the oldest playing golf course in the world dating back to 1672. Walking around the edge of these famous leisure facilities we pick up a path across Levenhall Links. This path can be muddy in wet weather as it winds its way through gorse bushes to the edge of various ponds and lochans that provide a habitat to many varieties of birdlife.
We will pause here in one of the hides to consume any refreshments you may have brought with you.
The final part of today's walk turns westwards along the seafront. Often accompanied by a brisk offshore wind the paved path offers great views of Edinburgh, Arthurs Seat and the Pentland Hills in the distance.
Please bring your own refreshments as while I plan to stop at a cafe in town for coffee we will also stop at one of the bird hides around the lochans on the coast for a lunch stop.
At the end of the walk you may wish to visit Newhailes House and Gardens. This is a National Trust for Scotland property. While the house can only be visited via pre booked tours there are gardens and a cafe which are open until 4pm. The car park has a charge of £4 to non members.
