Mining, canals and railways, and country parks - this 11 mile route from Upper Poynton gives insights into the industrial heritage of the area through railway lines, canals, mines and country estates.
From Nelson Pit CP in Higher Poynton and taking the Middlewood Way, we cross the Macclesfield Canal at the top end of the Princes Inclines before heading up into Lyme Park. Walking through the estate to Bowstones, we drop down to Harrop Wood before climbing again to go over Bakestonedale Moor then meet the canal again at Adlington Basin before returning to Nelson Pit along the canal.
The route: Nelson Pit CP - Barlow House Farm - Platt Wood Farm - Lyme Park - Bowstones - Further Harrop Farm - Harrop Wood - Gausie Brow - Bakestonedale Moor - Birchencliff - Harrop Brow - Lockgate Farm - Adlington Basin - Nelson Pit CP
Meet in the lower car park near the toilets at 10.00am. Parking costs £3.70 all day (additional costs if using RingGo). Street parking may also be available.
Bring poles (if you use them), lunch and drinks. The route is a mixture of paths and tracks, bridleways, lanes and tow paths. All may be muddy after rain.
No dogs as there is livestock in fields.
