This is a long distance circular walk starting and finishing in Middleham which includes a climb to the top of Penhill Beacon (1726ft/526m.
From Middleham we make our way past the Castle and onto the Gallops and head over to Common Lane, we then have a long road walk before turning off and crossing a few fields to gain access to the lane which takes us to the base of Penhill Beacon. A short steep climb then takes us to the summit where, weather dependant, we will stop for a lunch break. ( great views on a clear day).
After the break we will walk along the ridge towards Black Scar before heading down over the fields and along farm tracks to reach the village of West Witton where ,time dependant, we may stop at the village store for refreshments. From here we we will make our way down to the River Ure and follow the footpaths alongside the river, for the most part, back into Middleham.
Middleham is renowned for the training of race horses so there will be plenty to see in and around the area, it is also famous for its castle which we will pass on the walk.
The walking is quite varied consisting of fields, farm tracks, moorland, wooded areas and some road walking and may be muddy in some areas, so walking poles may be useful. It may also be possible that we encounter cattle in some of the fields at low level.
There is an option after the walk to have meal at the Cover Bridge inn . Please let the leader know no later than 30th August if you would like to book a place.
