This is a circular walk through and around the picturesque Porthkerry Country Park, which was donated to the people of Barry by Sir Samuel Romilly and used for training part of the D Day invasion force.
The e-link below provides further info on the park and its history.
The walk starts from Cold Knap's beach car park next to the Italian gardens with its 'Welsh harp' shaped lake built in the 1920's. Following a short stop at the site of a 3rd century AD Roman port building/villa, we'll proceed along the Glamorgan Heritage coast before decending the 'Golden Steps' into Porthkerry Park. Then it's up to the small hamlet of Porthkerry and its 13th century St. Curig's Church.
Walking back down to the park along the ancient access path from the bygone port, we'll stop at the cafe for a short break. We then head under the impressive Vale of Glamorgan railway viaduct and along the 'Heartbeat trail' before visiting the site of the old saw mill in the appropriately named Millwood. After leaving the wood, we'll take the path through Cwm Barry and out of the park to pass the remains of Barrry Castle (yes, we have one but not as grand as Cardiff's!!! ). Finally, we'll pass through the grade 2 listed Romilly Park and back to Cold Knap for more cafes.
