Overview

Update following the recce undertaken on Monday 5 January 2026:

This walk draws upon previous walks to Maesbury. We have included a new section heading north along the tow path from Queen's Head and then through several fields to West Felton. The fields were covered in snow on Monday with occasional patches of thin ice and water underneath. We navigated across these carefully without too many problems, using our poles to check before stepping forward. As the snow melts  the field route is therefore likely to be wet in places. The walk leaders will aim to guide walkers through the fields to avoid the wet sections where possible. Some walkers may prefer to walk in Wellingtons.

The second half of the walk takes us  to the Motte at St Michael's Church in West Felton , where scaffolding was being constructed yesterday, then on to Winifred's Well and back along the tow path.

Please bring something waterproof to sit on for the lunch and coffee break.

New walkers are welcome and may find it helpful to contact the walk leader Alison H prior to the walk .

Original walk description:

A circular and predominantly flat route following sections of Montgomery Canal tow path combined with quiet lanes and surrounding fields. The route provides leisurely walking. There are likely to be muddy sections so walking poles are recommended. There are a small number of stiles on the route. The walk route may be adapted in the week prior to the walk to accommodate any changes required due to the weather. Please check the walk details on the website by Tuesday 6 January 2026 in case any late changes have been made following the final recce.

Walkers should bring food and drink for two breaks on the walk.
