Overview

Roslin Glen:

Leaders: Paul and Allanna Harper (07738 486416)

Meet at Currie Library at 0930 for a 0945 departure

or meet at the Roslin Chapel carpark at 1000. There are no charges for this carpark.                  Postcode: EH25 9PU    What3words: /// view.landlady.recount

The walk: Short but pretty walk on dirt paths, some pavements and roads and is 4.25 miles with a 320 foot ascent.

Description: Leaving Roslin Chapel car-park we head north past Slatebarns caravan park to a wood high above the river (North Esk) with a view of the cliffs where the  William Wallace cave is situated. The Cave was apparently used by William Wallace during the battle of Roslin Glen in 1303. After a short loop through the woods on dirt paths , we return to the car-park and head south west past Roslin Cemetery before descending into Roslin Glen and walking along the south side of the river.

We have a short walk along a pavement alongside the B7003 before heading to the Penicuik to Musselburgh cycle walkway ( the old Edinburgh to Pebbles railway line) and the former Roslin Castle Station where we will stop for coffee.

We follow the walkway leading to Auchendinny and then drop down to the south side of the river and arrive at the remains of the Roslin Gunpowder  Mill. We continue on this before crossing the road onto a pavement that leads us back to the old Roslin Carpet factory and park where we will have lunch.

We will walk across the bridge and ascend (fairly steep but short) steps to Roslin Castle ruins and bridge. There is the option for people to walk under the bridge prior to going up to the castle ruins , but this is very muddy at present.

There is then a short walk up to the carpark.

There are a couple of steep ascents and a walk along a quiet road with no pavement.

As the paths are mostly packed earth it is likely to be muddy - Gaiters and poles are recommended.

There are toilets at the Roslin Glen Chapel visitors centre that can be used, however because it is a small visitors centre they would ask that small numbers at a time use them.

There is a cafe at the visitors centre along with information about the chapel.

Please WhatsApp or text the leader if you would like to book a place on this walk with your name and mobile telephone number, and advise if you have a medical condition relevant to your walking. Please also provide an emergency contact number.

Please let the Leader know if you are travelling independently, also if you are happy to drive walkers from Currie.

We regret that no dogs are allowed on our walks.
