Overview

A brisk and undulating walk that will intentionally finish in the dark! The route is a figure of eight around the hills and woodland to the east of Sevenoaks, with two stops at Ightham Mote where this a cafe and toilets - the lunch stop at around 9 miles (bring a packed lunch) and then a second stop at around 15 miles. When leaving Ightham Mote for the second time the walk passes along the top of the Greensand Ridge as the sky darkens, and if the weather gods are kind to us then we will hopefully be treated to a sunsent and also, with November's full 'supermoon' being only a few days before, plenty of moonlight. We may even get to see some fireworks! The walk then passes through Knole Park, finishing on Sevenoaks High Street.

While it would be lovely to say we can rely on moonlight to find our way for the last few miles, as it is November it is strongly recommended to bring a fully charged torch or head torch. Total ascent is 700 metres and the pace will be brisk (average moving pace at just over 3mph if conditions are dry), but once darkness descends the pace will be slowed appropriately so the group stays closely together. Plenty of pubs and restaurants to choose from in Sevenoaks town centre at the end.

Travel: Take the 10:04 from London Charing Cross (Waterloo East: 10:07, London Bridge: 10:13) arrive at Sevenoaks at 10:36.

Buy a return to Sevenoaks. Those travelling from within the London travel zones can use contactless (but not oyster), however this cannot be used with a network railcard.

Meet inside the main building of Sevenoaks Railway Station - just past the ticket offices.
