Starting from Snailbeach, the walk passes through the historic remains of the local mining industry, then climbs up to Shepherd's Rock. From this high point, the trail leads down through Brook Vessons nature reserve and past Lordshill Chapel to the start. Much of the walk is within the Stiperstones National Nature Reserve.
The walk follows decent paths through woodland and across pasture and moorland. There is a short stretch of quiet road walking at the very end.
There are excellent views throughout the walk. To obtain these views, there is inevitably a significant amount of climbing involved. In essence, the entire first half of the walk is consistently uphill, while the second half is, unsurprisingly, largely downhill or flat.
There are public toilets at the starting car park (£2 donation requested).
