This six-mile walk starts from the large car park that serves Silchester football and cricket grounds, as well as a children's playground. At times the paths and tracks we shall use follow the Brenda Parker Way or St James' Way (the Camino Inglés). Initially we head for the Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum, following the walls round to the Amphitheatre via the North Gate. From here we shall pop into the mediaeval church of St Mary the Virgin, before completing our circuit of the walls via the South Gate. We then pass Dicker's Copse and walk along Byes Lane to Silchester Farm, before returning to the car park along the edges of Pamber Forest and Silchester Common. The countryside is a varied mixture of farmland, woodland and common, and although there are some ups and downs along the way, none of the ascents are particularly demanding.
There is only one stile, but it's one that is awkward and quite challenging because of a fallen tree, but passable with care. Otherwise, the route is straightforward along relatively firm paths, tracks and occasional little-used minor roads. Please be aware of the weather forecast for the day and dress accordingly, with sturdy footwear. Please also bring refreshments for the mid-walk break. If you would like to join us for this walk, please book online by 6.00 pm om Monday 03 November.
