Overview

Another in a series of walks on the South Downs Way aiming to reach Winchester later in 2026! Starting high on the downs at the Devils Dyke, the first half of the walk undulates over Beeding and Truleigh hills before descending quite steeply down to the River Adur. The route then re-ascends onto the downs above Steyning band round dramatic Peppercombe before another steep descent to the valley.

Although paths are generally good, in winter conditions boots will be essential and poles may also be helpful.
Half the walk is above 200m and walkers should expect conditions to be significantly colder , windier (or wetter) than at valley level. Please wear appropriate clothing and check for any weather warnings..

There are no facilities between the start and end of the walk so please bring drinks and a snack.

There are several cafes and pubs in Steyning to warm up in and wait for buses, lifts or taxis at the walk end.

NOTE: The walk can be shortened after 5 miles at the River Adur by walking independently along a river path to upper Beeding (one mile- buses) or along the Downslink Trail (flat three miles) to Shoreham (Station). The second half of the full walk is harder than the first.
Assistance dogs only on this walk please.
