You will enjoy superb views over the Beault Valley on this 10-mile walk from Ulcombe, which follows the ridge of the Greensand Escarpment.
Our route starts from the village church, which claims the yew tree beside it, is older than the birth of Christ, as we head out along the Greensand Way towards Sutton Valence. As we proceed along, we will pass East Sutton church, then on reaching Sutton Valance, will visit the church, then the ruins of the castle, from which there are great views over the Weald.
The next stage of the route, see us gradually descend, until we reach the small village of Grafty Green, which will be our lunch stop. There is the King's Head pub next to the green for anyone in need of a drink, but the planned pub stop today is later. However, there are actually five pubs along this route, which is a rarity these days on a country walk and is good to see.
After the luncheon adjournment, we to start to ascend, heading through Liverton Street, then upwards to the Pepper Box Inn, by which time the walk leader will be in need of refuelling with a drink, so you may wish to join him!
All that remains is to re-join the Greensand Way for the remainder of the walk back to the start point.
The terrain is on undulating paths, which could be muddy in places, and quiet country lanes, there are some climbs. This walk would be on the borderline of a leisurely to moderate grading, with approximately 1000 foot of ascent, maybe just a shade under.
Walk leader is Kevin Hall
