Overview

Enjoy a figure of eight walk around Walltown.

From Walltown Country Park we head east on Hadrian's Wall Path to Great Chesters, where you can see the outlines of Aesica, a large fort on Hadrian's Wall. Turning south and west we follow the course of the vallum along the valley to cross the HW path at Walltown near King Arthur's Well. We then follow a footpath across the moor to High Old Shields (with excellent views of the crags behind us). Our return is across farmland via Wood House and the ruined 12th-century Thirlwall Castle, picking up the HW path back to Walltown car park.
