Exploring the Welsh Borders around Whitton, Powys.
Walking the old drover roads, we will be exploring the little visited corners of the Welsh Marches.
The route will include a visit to the now tranquil ancient church at the Welsh hamlet of Pilleth.
This site is the location of a major battle between the English and Welsh, led by Owain Glyndwr. Welsh forces defeated a larger English army led by Edmund Mortimer on June 22, 1402. This battle, also known as the Battle of Bryn Glas, was a significant victory for Glyndwr and is considered one of his most important early successes for Welsh independence.
The church has featured in several historical TV programmes and has recently be filmed again for a BBC Wales history feature.
The walk will follow the drover routes from Whitton to Pilleth before ascending to Offa's Dyke footpath for wonderful views across the Welsh hills and distant mountain ranges of south and mid-Wales.
Don't expect to see many walkers on this route, until we meet the walkers super-highway of Offa's Dyke.
The route ends with some of the best views Offa's Dyke has to offer across the wild mid-Wales hills.
Parking is on the Community Carpark in Whitton.
This route has no stiles. However the descent from Offa's Dyke to Whitton is a steady steep descent over grassland and moor.
