Overview

Starting from Wheathampstead which has a long history. At the end of the last Ice Age, Mesolithic hunter gatherers left working flint tools here. An Iron Age farmer kept cattle and lived in a round house beside the Devil's Dyke.

We head North passing Gustard Wood towards Blackmore End (legend has it the highway woman known as The Wicked Lady kept her horse here). Returning south to Batford, we follow the River Lea for a short distance. From here we return along the old railway line to The Gate House, which was the original level crossing-keeper's house. We then follow The Lea Valley Walk back to Wheathampstead, where refreshments are available.

This walk has open views, quiet lanes and a tree lined walk along the disused railway line.
