Overview

A bit of history about Appuldurcombe and its notorious owner in the late 18th century, Richard Worsley, and his ill-fated marriage.  It'll be the last Sunday the house is open to the public for the year (free entry), we'll have a quick walk around.  Also we'll be walking some paths recently reopened, including V75 up the cliff behind St Lawrence, and Wroxall steps, as well as the downs under which the Ventnor giant lives.  Some great views of the whole island from the highest point.

There are a lot of steps/stairs on this walk, and some steep hills up and down (sticks/poles may be of assistance). Also some stiles, including some of doubtful accessibility for dogs. Any dogs who do come need to be on a lead where we cross pasture with livestock (sheep, cattle, goats). We'll stop for snacks at Worsley monument (great island views), bring your own refreshment.

Watch out for ticks and remove ASAP. If you are unsure about your ability to undertake this walk, please contact the walks leader. If you need to leave the walking group, please ensure you inform the leader or back marker.

Please note that there may be short sections of road walking, so please walk in a single file and take good care.

Wise to look at the website on the day just in case of any changes or additional info. And in the event of extreme weather please check back for cancellation notices.

Emergencies
It's very rare that an emergency occurs, but we may need info about

  • Any health concerns that you have
  • Any emergency contact information

We'd ask you to make sure that we have ready access to this, if needed.

Some people may wish to carry an ICE (in case of emergency) card. We have Ramblers cards for this purpose. Do discuss this subject with your walk leader if it is of interest.
