You are spoilt for choice when a walk commences from Wye, and this 13 mile top-drawer circuit is no exception, as it climbs up to the small hamlet of Waltham, which is just one of the highlights of the route.
The walk commences gently, as we head away from the church on the flat, which offers a good view of Wye Crown, and this historic landmark will be visited later in the day. On arrival at the foot of the Downs, we zig-zag steadily uphill to arrive at the Millstone, whilst the sign close-by suggest this "could be the best view in Kent", and this statement is very probably true. We then continue past the Devil's Kneading Trough, as we gradually ascend further, to eventually arrive at Waltham Church for a well earned snack break.
The highlight of the second-half of the walk, sees us drop down, to just above the 180 foot Wye Crown, which was carved into the hillside by students of the now-closed Wye College in the spring of 1902, to celebrate the coronation of Edward VIII. After enjoying more terrific views, all that remains is to descend back to the village for the obligatory post-walk pub stop.
Do you think this walk is for you?, well it is steep in places with several climbs throughout, but should be easily within the capabilities of the regular walker, it could be muddy in places if wet weather has preceded the walk.
