Two trains enable us to reach Guide Bridge (aka Ashton-under-Lyne) which leads to a short walk along the Ashton canal to reach the Portland basin where three canals meet. We will have an extended elevenses stop here to enable a visit to the Industrial museum (free entry) and cafe. We then join the start of the Peak Forest canal for a towpath walk to Marple (16 locks and an aqueduct). If we are late we can ‘miss Marple’ ( sorry - blame Adrian) and catch the return train at Romiley. Altogether a relaxed walk on one of the shortest daylight hours days as a prelude to the festive break.
We go through the unlit Woodley tunnel. It has a safety rail but also some puddles so do bring a torch.
Travel is a bit complicated. We catch the 9:14 train to Guide Bridge with a change at Romiley so take care if you are sitting on your own. The return is on the 16:10 from Marple, 16:06 from Romiley.
Tickets - these are the best value we could find with a bit of flexibility.
Outbound - Advanced single Sheffield to Guide Bridge £6.65 with senior railcard.
Return - Advanced single Romiley to Sheffield £6.30 with senior railcard.
Note: Advanced singles must be purchased at least 10 minutes before the train time and there may be a limited number.
We are suggesting the return ticket from Romiley because it is just a few pence more than the ticket from Marple but gives some security in case we are running late.
