Obituary

Anthony Malt BA (28 September 1946 – 6 July 2024)
Tony was born in Scarborough in 1946, the eldest son of Joe and Wendy Malt.  When he was very young, the family lived in Pickering before moving to Malton, living first at the Friends’ Meeting House, where Tony’s father worked, before settling in Norton, along with Tony’s two younger brothers.
Tony attended Norton County Boy’s School then Malton Grammar School which he left in 1963, and started work as an apprentice with the GPO, later BT.  He gained numerous City & Guilds telecommunications and engineering qualifications and  spent the majority of his working life employed by BT, the main part between 1969 and 1988 working as a Technical Officer at RAF Fylingdales Ballistic Early Warning station on the North York Moors. This was a responsible role, maintaining the phone lines between Fylingdales and the US in the event of a nuclear attack.
Tony and Janet were married at St Peter’s Church, Norton, in 1971. Claire was born in 1973 and Sally in 1976.  Tony enrolled on a BA course with the Open University and after six years’ part time study gained his degree in 1988. In the early 1980s Tony worked in other roles with BT, first in the Exchange at Malton, then all over the North-East as a field manager in the Payphones’ Division. He took early retirement at age 50 in 1996.
During the following 20 years, Tony and Janet completed all of the Wainwrights in the Lake District, many of the Munros in Scotland and went on many walking trips in the UK and abroad. Tony continued to work, first as a Senior Driver for York Emergency Doctors and then as a Quality Engineer at a communications business in York, before retiring fully in 2006. Sadly, Janet passed away in 2018.
In the last six years of his life, Tony walked and led regularly for both Ryedale and York Ramblers and also for the Bebbington Walking Club from the Wirral.  He was  an accomplished photographer, a hobby that gave him great pleasure, and an active member of Malton Camera Club,
He leaves two children, Claire and Sally and four grandchildren – Jack, Will, Lucy and Harry.

His funeral will be held at 10.30am on Thursday 1st August at St Peter's Church, Langton Road, Norton YO17 9AE, followed by a wake at the Old Lodge Hotel, Old Maltongate, Malton YO17 7EG.

Walking in Ryedale and North York Moors

You will find a warm welcome whatever the weather with the Ryedale group. We walk in beautiful countryside including the North York Moors and Howardian Hills offering moorland, forests, historical attractions and small villages using footpaths and tracks. We walk in a group led by one of our volunteers and no-one gets left behind.

We usually walk 8-10 miles on Sundays and bring a packed lunch and drinks. There are also shorter, more leisurely walks of 5-7 miles on some Fridays or Saturdays. Many of our walks end with an opportunity to have a cuppa or pint together. Our walks are only suitable for assistance dogs unless otherwise indicated.

As a member you will also be invited to join our social events which could include walks with afternoon teas, picnics or mince pies and themed walks.

Just look at the walks finder for details. We hope to meet you soon.
