The South Dorset coastline showing Chesil Beach and Portland

Walking in South Dorset

Welcome to the South Dorset Ramblers. We are based in South Dorset with most of our members coming from Dorchester, Weymouth and the surrounding villages. We have some of the best scenery in England with excellent coastal and inland walking, including national and local trails such as the South West Coast Path and the Jubilee and Hardy Trails.

Our area had the first section of the England Coast Path - this opened between Rufus Castle on Portland and Lulworth Cove to allow the public to see the 2012 Olympic sailing events from the coast.

It also includes parts of the Jurassic Coast, which is England’s only natural World Heritage site, and the South Dorset Ridgeway Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The area is dotted with Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman remains, so there are always points of interest during every one of our walks!

Our friendly walking community

We pride ourselves on being a friendly and welcoming group. We walk throughout Dorset, and normally include drink stops, and a picnic lunch on longer walks.

Our walks vary in distance and speed of walking so that there is something for everyone. and we regularly convene in a teashop or pub after the walk to continue socialising.

We usually walk on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. The walks are typically between 5 and 14 miles and occasionally include themed walks such as wild flower, Thomas Hardy or archaeological walks.

We are actively involved in keeping and improving public access to our beautiful countryside by monitoring proposed changes to Rights of Way (ROW), checking the state of paths and signage, carrying out path clearing where necessary and opposing developments that would have a negative impact on the countryside.
