This is a short evening walk from Ashwell to the Ruddery Pit in the adjacent parish of Guilden Morden. The route goes past Ashwell Springs and takes Ashwell Street and Shire Balk to the Ruddery Pit, an abandoned clunch pit. The return will be cross-country.
Walkers can choose whether to cross the stepping stones at Ashwell Springs or to go round them. The Ruddery area is a long since abandoned settlement with its own springs, which have been flowing in the recent wet weather. The hill with the clunch pit was excavated for Roman and ancient British remains and is now run as a nature reserve, although we will be a little early for the orchids.
We can take refreshments after the walk at the Three Tuns or one of the other Ashwell pubs
