Overview

There is a limit of 20 people for this event. Please book using the email link.

Catch the 09.08 from Paddington. Buy a cheap day return to Henley-on-Thames. Change at Twyford but get your skates on. Meet at Henley-on-Thames railway station at 09.57.

We walk west from Henley Station to reach a secluded valley for a couple of miles before climbing to the village of Rotherfield Greys. Then down into the valley soon to pick up a minor road for a few hundred yards before climbing to view Grey's Court, a handsome late-Elizabethan manor house. The house stands in the courtyard of a 14th-century castle. The Great Tower, still a dominant feature, was built in 1348. Admission to the house is £20 but this is not on our itinerary today. Time to retrace some of our steps for the mile to lunch at Rotherfield Peppard (5 miles from the start). Lunch will be at the Red Lion. Please email me if you would like a pub lunch. For picnickers there is a common opposite the pub with one bench 100 yards beyond the pub.

The afternoon is east along long stretches of green lane: Dog Lane then Pack and Prime Lane. We finally meet with our earlier route to return to the station, with the option of tea and cake in the best Henley tea shop. Other tea shops are available. Return trains from Henley to Twyford are two an hour.

We are walking in the Chilterns and there are a number of hills in the morning, two steep but short. The route is virtually flat after lunch.

Distance: 8.5 miles. Grade: Moderate.
