An undulating walk in the countryside close to the M1. From Aberford, we walk across fields to Hazelwood Castle hotel for a break, and then to Saxton. The area around Saxton is steeped in history and we will be walking through the site of the Battle of Towton which took place on Palm Sunday 1461. We will walk alongside Cock Beck, which, according to the history books, ran red with the blood of the thousands of soldiers killed on that day, one of the bloodiest battles in English history. All the paths and tracks are good and well used - there are 6 stiles.
N.B. this walk will be about 11 miles because of a different start point in the village. For anyone who would like to knock just over a mile off this, you can join the walk by the Arabian Horse pub in the centre of the village. There is limited on street parking here, please park considerately. I'll see you there just after 10, no need to let me know if that's what you plan to do.
