Area short walk. Distances are generally 6-8 miles unless specified.
From the station we cross London Road, proceed through the park and eventually over fields to Nether Alderley, where St. Mary's Church and the (restored) Mill date from the 14th century. We then head on the track skirting Alderley Park to Hayman's Farm, up the gentle ascent of Finlow Hill, where Jodrell Bank can be seen, and along to and across Macclesfield Road to The Wizard car park, reaching "the Edge" via various woodland paths. We will see a spectacular old tree, the site of the 1588 Spanish Armada Beacon, and the Wizard's Well, and (weather permitting) have far reaching views, on a meandering gentle descent (though PLEASE NOTE there are a few sets of good, shallowish steps to negotiate), through woodland to Mottram Road and the station.
The most convenient pub is the De Trafford Arms on London Road, approx 10 mins from the station, or there are various coffee shops in the village.
Approx 7 miles, overall approx 500 ft of ascent, but nothing steep and only 2 stiles, both straightforward and well maintained.
Some of the woodland tracks and parts of fields are muddy and you will need to be aware of wet leaves and possible tree roots in places but otherwise good. Gaiters and walking poles are advised.
There are 3 busy main roads to cross, London Road using the pelican crossing, then the road through Nether Alderley and Macclesfield Road, both with care. A little road walking, but on quiet roads.
There will be some livestock in fields.
There are no toilets at the station and the only ones on the route are at The Wizard car park.
Return trains to Manchester Piccadilly are at 10, 33 and 37 mins after the hour.
Seniors will require a return ticket Cheadle Hulme to Alderley Edge.
No booking required, although we do ask that everyone carries an ICE card - we can supply if needed.
The walks will invariably involve ascent and descent, some of which may be steep.
