A winter walk contrasting moors, riverside and fields around Allenheads.
This walk climbs by minor road and footpath onto Byerhope Moor where we follow a good track contouring around Byerhope Raceground. We pass a prominent currick with views across the East Allen towards Killhope Law, and several ruined farmsteads dotting the hillsides. We descend to Fell View and follow the River East Allen via St Peter's churchyard and Corn Mill to Spartylea Bridge.
Our return is across fields via Elpha Green with views into the isolated Swinhope Valley. At Swinhope Mill we climb to White Ridge. We make our way down across fields to Hammer Shields, Dirt Pot and around the edge of School Plantation.
A mix of good tracks, field and riverside paths, with some short sections on minor roads. One field with rough ground near Swinhope Mill.
Enjoy a warming cuppa at the Hemmel cafe in Allenheads.
