Level 9 mile walk with the natural beauty of Almondell Country Park and the industrial history of the W Lothian Shale Trail and Union Canal, crossing a dramatic viaduct and aqueduct spanning the River Almond valley.
Starts from the Almondell Country Park South car park along the tree and bush lined East Calder/Uphall Station path (part of the Shale Trail), turns east along the path then minor road past Roman Camp Cottages, Lookabootye and Muirend to a short stretch of the Union Canal over the towering aqueduct. Leave the canal onto the path along the river valley leading back to the Country Park Visitor Centre. Nasymthe Bridge and back to the car park.
Underfoot conditions good with some muddy puddles, especially after rain– laid paths, on minor roads and woodland path. Boots, gaiters and poles advisable but far from essential.
