A return to the tranquillity of the seventh-century Chapel of St Peter-on-the-Wall, reputedly England's second-oldest surviving church building, on this most rural stretch of Essex coast.
Graded strenuous because of distance, but terrain is entirely flat so may also suit those recently building up to this distance.
Walk follows the coast from Burnham, each mile on the lonely path increasing the surprising sense of remoteness just one estuary from the Thames, before eventually joining the St Peter's Way pilgrimage route to reach the chapel. Route then turns inland to Southminster.
Please bring packed lunch, pub stops during and after walk.
Terrain: Coast, fields, lanes.
Travel: Take 8:50 from London Liverpool Street (8:58 Stratford), change at Wickford (arr. 9:28, dep. 9:35), arr Burnham-on-Crouch 10:00.
Buy return to Southminster.
