This low-level walk of around 11 miles with minimal ascent, starts from the village of Bethersden, which is located on the A28, 5 miles west of Ashford. Expect the usual mix of open countryside, farmland & wooded areas, including a section through Dering Wood.
Hopefully the weather will be kinder to us this time, as it was a tad damp when Ashford Ramblers previously started from the village in October last year. We didn’t even venture into the pub after the walk, which is rarity indeed, as the six of us were soaked!
We commence the anticlockwise route beside St Margaret’s church, which originates from the mid-12th century, to soon head through Frid Wood and onward to Frid Corner. We pass through Snoadhill Farm, followed by an area of woodland, marked very originally on OS Explorer map 137 as “The Forest”!
After crossing the railway line, the circuit passes close to Pluckley Station, then joins a short section of the Greensand Way, which we leave upon reaching Lambden. We drop down to Mundy Bois but will almost certainly arrive too early for a pit stop at the delightful Rose & Crown.
Now heading back towards Bethersden, a section through Dering Wood takes place, before the circuit heads to Wissenden & Lamberden Wood, before the finish.
As always there will be a short picnic stop (approximately 20 minutes) at a suitable stopping point en route, plus post walk drinks at The George, for anyone wishing to join the usual suspects.
