As its name suggests, Bledlow Ridge sits high on a ridge between two valleys in the heart of the Chilterns, making it an ideal starting point for exploring some of the most scenic and unspoilt parts of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
This specially designed circular walk begins by heading north towards Lodge Hill, offering far-reaching views across North Buckinghamshire. The route then loops back into the hidden gem of Yoesden Nature Reserve — a steep chalk grassland valley renowned for its seasonal carpet of wildflowers, orchids, and rare butterflies.
From there, the path continues along footpaths and bridleways through a mix of open fields and woodland, passing through Radnage and into the magical stillness of Crowell Woods, before climbing up to Chinnor Hill — an area of ancient woodland with spectacular views across the rolling Chiltern Hills and patchwork farmland stretching to the horizon.
The walk offers a rich variety of terrain — woodland trails, farm tracks, and gentle hillside paths — providing constant visual interest and moments of quiet natural beauty. It is moderately challenging, with several climbs and descents, and includes a couple of stiles. We will also cross one field where there are cows — when walked recently, they appeared calm and unbothered.
Rather than a single long lunch break, we’ll have two shorter picnic stops:
-
The first will be at Yoesden Nature Reserve (approx. 4 miles in) — please bring a sitting mat or something comfortable to sit on, as seating is limited.
-
The second will be at around the 8-mile point, offering another chance to rest and refuel.
Sturdy footwear and hiking poles are recommended, especially for uneven sections. Please bring a picnic lunch and plenty of water, particularly in warm weather.
