Distance: approx. 9.5 - 10 miles (circular)
Terrain: Rolling countryside with field paths, village lanes and riverside sections
Pace: Moderate
Start/finish: Walkern - St Mary's Church Car Park on Church End
This varied circular walk explores the gently rolling countryside of East Hertfordshire, linking a series of attractive villages and following stretches of the rare chalk stream, the River Beane.
Starting at Walkern and the river ford, the route heads out across open farmland towards the picturesque village of Benington, with sections alongside the River Beane – one of Hertfordshire’s few remaining chalk streams, prized for its clear waters and delicate ecosystems. There are fine views of open countryside and Benington Lordship and the atmospheric ruins of a Norman castle rising above the landscape. We will stop for tea at the Church Farm at Ardeley, and to savour the small and characterful rural settlement known for its group of thatched roof houses and community farm and farm shop.
The return route loops gently back through open countryside to Walkern, offering a rich mix of river, village and farmland scenery.
Please bring a picnic lunch, which we will enjoy at a suitable point along the route.
