In a change to the planned programme, we return this week to Greenlaw Moor and the Marchmont estate. Leaving Greenlaw, we pass through the leafy Greenlaw Dean, following the course of the Blackadder Water and the Fangrist Burn to the prehistoric fort at Blackcastle Rings and the ancient Heriot's Dyke boundary, where we enter the moor. We are barely a mile from an A road, but enjoy the sense of a silent and remote landscape, which we cross to reach the amazing Kaims, the deposit made by a glacial river in the later stages of the Ice Age.
We cross by faint paths to the trig point on Kyles Hill, overlooking the moor, and drop down to cross the Duns Road an enter an entirely different landscape in Marchmont's woodlands. We have a view of one of Scotland's finest Palladian mansions at Marchmont before descending to the solum of the former Leaderfoot to Reston railway which takes us back to Greenlaw. It's a long walk by our standards, but the ascent is a series of modest climbs, with no strenuous uphill sections. On a clear day, there are vast vistas to enjoy along with the varied landscapes, the sense of a vanished past and, with luck, glimpses of the wildlife of the moor and woodland.
Meet at Church Street Greenlaw with food for a lunch stop and drinks breaks. Hill-walking gear and boots required and poles recommended. There is pleanty of parking around the centre of Greenlaw., where there are public toilets. There are post-walk refreshments available in hotels at Greenlaw and Gordon - check websites for other locations.
Public transport is very limited on Sundays.
Notes for non-members.
Please register by email or text (if a phone number is shown). Please give your name and your own mobile number. (We need this in case of any problems on the day of the walk, e.g. late cancellations or an alteration to the starting point or time.)
Please observe any registration deadlines for the walk, and please register as early as possible, to give leaders time to message about any further details, e.g. parking, directions, and general advice.
If you haven't walked before with any Ramblers groups, we allow you to walk with us for a maximum of 3 walks, before you decide whether to join the Ramblers.
If you are new to us, please tell the walk leader what kind of walking you do, and are comfortable with. The leader knows the walk and will advise whether it is suitable for you, or if it is better for you to start with a leisurely walk, so that you can judge your fitness. We don't want you to be disappointed by your first walk.
In Case of Emergency: Members carry I.C.E. cards which identify the name and number of a person to be contacted in an emergency. Non-members should bring a similar record on paper, placed in an accessible part of their clothing or rucksack. We have never had such an incident, but we need to cover all eventualities.
