A picturesque walk through one of Yorkshire Wildlife Trust's nature reserves. From Wentbridge we walk through a wooded area then along the limestone ridge of the Went Valley. There are plenty of flowers out at the moment which, in turn, attract a variety of butterflies. Arriving at the village of Kirk Smeaton, we will make use of the many benches in the community garden for our lunch. The return leg will follow the riverside path on the opposite side of the valley. There are 3 stiles; most of the paths are narrow and uneven with exposed stones & tree roots; there are a number of fallen trees on the return path which pose no great problems. Be aware that the ongoing roadworks on the A1 often cause queues so allow plenty of time for your journey, or choose an alternative route. Insect repellent is advised.
