A joint walk with Surbiton & District History Society (S&DHS), who recently hosted a talk on the London Necropolis Railway. We will be following the line of the former railway, pausing frequently at notable graves and listed monuments.
We will be visiting St. Edward Orthodox Church, where the relics of Saint Edward the Martyr (Edward II) are kept. Edward was crowned in Kingston.
Notable graves will include those of Surbiton residents Daniel Nicols and Alfred Bestall. Also the grave of Fred “The Demon” Spofforth, who was subject of an S&DHS talk.
Lunch will be in Pirbright at The Cricketers on the Green PH and Yurt Cafe. Or have a picnic by village pond.
Opt-out at lunch (2.9m): Bus 28 every hour from Pirbright to Brookwood.
After lunch, we will visit the grave of Henry Morton Stanley and St Michael and All Angels Church. We then return to the Cemetery, including the first Zoroastrian burial ground established in Europe.
