Starting from the car park, we initially head east towards the A34 before gradually turning south to descend past Hodcott Down and the Gallops, to reach Windmill Down. We then climb gently through Woolver's Borders and High Robins, both of which adjoin open fields and pleasant wooded areas, to join Old Street before turning west on Furze Lane. A short detour around Upper Farm takes us past The Old Rectory, once occupied by John Betjeman, to Farnborough and All Saints Church, where there will be an opportunity to see the memorial window by John Piper.
Reasonably firm but exposed field paths then take us eastwards into West Ilsley, past the Duck Pond, before we begin the steady climb to the Ridgway, using a firm track on the opposite side of Hodcott Down. Once on the Ridgeway, we head west to return to our cars.
Although the majority of field paths and tracks are firm, there is one section along along Furze Lane that is expected to be wetter and muddier than when I did the recce. Accordingly, walking boots are recommended as are walking poles, if you normally use them. Gaiters may also be a good option.
Please look at the weather forecast on the day of the walk and wear appropriate clothing as well as bringing sufficient food and drink for day.
The walk is limited to 18 walkers and you are requested to book online using the link below, before 6.00pm on Saturday, 21st February.
